The BBC has offered an unconditional apology after an investigation found a prominent journalist used “deceitful” methods to secure a landmark interview with Princess Diana as her marriage broke down.
BBC journalist Martin Bashir conducted the career-defining interview with Diana in 1995, in which she detailed the breakdown of her relationship with Prince Charles.
BBC Director-General Tim Davie said the interview “fell far short of what audiences have a right to expect.”
“While the BBC cannot turn back the clock after a quarter of a century, we can make a full and unconditional apology. The BBC offers that today,” Davie said.

Thousands of police officers plan to join a rally in central Paris on Wednesday to demand harsher punishment for attacks against their own, two weeks after an officer was shot dead while investigating drug deals.
According to Yahoonews, police unions called for the gathering to push for better protection and less tolerance towards violence against officers, a year ahead of a presidential election in which security issues will be a key topic.
Police officer Eric Masson was shot dead earlier this month while investigating activity at a known drug-dealing site in the city of Avignon in southern France.

Paul Mooney has sadly died at the age of 79 after suffering a sudden heart attack, his publicist has confirmed.
Mooney, known as the Godfather of Comedy, was at his home in Oakland, California with his family when he passed away
The actor, who was nicknamed the Godfather of Comedy, was best known as a writer for comedian Richard Pryor, playing singer Sam Cooke in The Buddy Holly Story in 1978 and Junebug in Bamboozled in 2000, and his appearances on Dave Chappelle‘s Show.
He was pronounced dead at 5:30 a.m. PT on Wednesday 19 May, with his representative, Cassandra Williams, saying: “It just happened.”

The first African invitational swimming championship has been fixed to take place in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State capital, the organizers have announced.
The championship tagged, “Garden City 2021” is being organised by Demakers Business Roundtable in collaboration with the Nigeria Aquatics Federation, Women Awards Championship and African Swimming Federation, Leadership reports.
The organisers said the choice of Port-Harcourt was in appreciation of the excellent work of the administration of Governor Nyesom Wike.
“The organisers of the championship have specially planned to honour the Rivers State Governor with this prestigious first-of-its-kind event across the African continent,” the organisers said in a joint statement.
The Premier League in England has agreed to renew its £5 billion ($7 billion) domestic television deal.
It is a move that provides greater financial certainty to clubs at all levels amid the coronavirus pandemic.
According to Yahoo Sport, the English top-flight sought and secured government approval in principle to roll over its existing rights agreement with BT Sport, Amazon Prime Video, BBC Sport and SkySport.
This is for a further three years through to 2025.
Under normal circumstances, the rights would have been contested in an open tender, but the league was able to demonstrate “exceptional and compelling reasons” to the government.
