Tribune News Service As life continues to reopen in this new season of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ohio’s colleges and universities are preparing to welcome students back with open and less socially distanced arms this fall. Some schools already announced plans for their return to campus in the fall before students finished their exams this spring. But with guidance from the Ohio Department of Health and the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention being frequently updated, and Ohio lawmakers trying to ban certain pandemic-related mandates, many school’s plans have already changed this summer.

Cleveland St to require coronavirus vaccinations despite law COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Cleveland State University said Thursday it will continue to require that students living on campus be vaccinated against the coronavirus despite a new law prohibiting public schools and colleges in Ohio from mandating the vaccine. The school, the only public university in the state with such a requirement, said the mandate will continue since the fall term begins Aug. 21 and the law doesn’t take effect until October. “Over the last three semesters, our students, faculty, and staff have worked hard to keep our community safe,” said spokesperson Allison Bibb-Carson. “As a result, Cleveland State University achieved one of lowest infection rates among urban universities in the country.”

As Ohio s colleges and universities were hustling to get COVID-19 vaccines in students arms this spring, Ohio Wesleyan University President Rock Jones made an announcement about fall semester: Students would be required be get vaccinated to return to campus. Jones announcement came in early March, but the Delaware private liberal arts university quickly changed course after some questioned the decision to require the vaccines if they re still under emergency use authorization. OWU briefly changed its plans to strongly encourage COVID-19 vaccinations and only require them once they were fully FDA approved. Now, three months after its last change, OWU is back to its original plan. Students will be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 for fall semester and provide proof of vaccination before July 23.
