What it s like playing bridge against billionaires - including Bill Gates

Bill Gates playing bridge with Warren Buffett Credit: Alamy One thing that is not irretrievably broken in Bill Gates’ life is his relationship with the game of bridge. The Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist, with a net worth of $131.3 billion, has been playing for years against fellow enthusiasts, including the tycoon Warren Buffett - and myself.  A recent interview pictured his desk stacked with bridge magazines, while he explained how he “love[s] the strategy involved. You have to try to communicate with your partner using nothing but your bids.”   I last played against Bill in Montreal in 2002 in the World Mixed Pairs Championship. At the table he is intense but relaxed and plays with a smile, regardless of the result. Between deals we chatted about another of Bill s passions, wine.

Online shopping tycoon who founded The Hut Group hands £100MILLION of shares to charity

The founder of The Hut Group has pledged to donate £100million of the online retailer s shares to charity and hand all his salary to good causes after the firm s profits soared by a third last year. Executive chairman and chief executive Matthew Moulding, 49, will give the mammoth stake to the Moulding Foundation, set up by the entrepreneur and his family last year. The move, which comes just seven months after The Hut Group owner THG s initial public offering (IPO), sees him become one of the UK s biggest philanthropists. THG said it had already donated £300,000 to charities between last September s IPO and the end of 2020, instead of paying Mr Moulding and co-director John Gallemore their base salaries.
