and for the most part, the only snow of the year. don ford, cbs 5. well, what s turning out to be the start of a great ski weekend in the sierra is now tinged with tragedy. an expert extreme skier caught in an avalanche in the sierra yesterday died. the 29-year-old, benjamin brackett was pronounced dead from his injuries at the hospital last night. authorities say that he was skiing in an avalanche hazard area outside alpine meadows resort when he triggered the slide. the friends, family and colleagues are stunned by his death. he was a really good guy and a lot of fun to ski with and hang out with. his curly hair and his carefree smile and eye that is lit up a room. he was described as a life of the party and a man who lived on the edge. authorities say brackett and his two friends were skiing in fresh powder in and out of bounds area outside alpine meadows. they believe that he loosened fresh powder sitting on top of some older icy snow when the avalanche hit. bracket
