Eco-schemes that pay farmers for semi-natural areas proposed

SHARING OPTIONS: The system would require landscape features and semi-natural areas to be mapped at a farm-scale level. \ Philip Doyle Scoring Irish farms based on the volume of semi-natural vegetation and landscape features present has been suggested as Ireland’s flagship eco-scheme by a group of scientists and researchers. The proposals have been made as part of an EU-wide report on how the next CAP can improve biodiversity. Around 25% of Ireland’s direct payment budget, some €300m, is to be ring-fenced for eco-schemes. Eco-schemes will be voluntary for farmers, but those who opt out will not secure a full direct payment.

Plean Bee : An insight into efforts to reverse pollinator decline in Ireland

May 11, 2021 12:28 pm A one-hour documentary titled ‘Plean Bee’ is set to be aired by TG4 next week on World Bee Day, May 20. The programme will focus on the All Ireland Pollinator Plan and how it is mobilising individuals and communities to reverse pollinator decline across all of Ireland. According to the show-runners, bees and pollinators have been declining in Ireland and other countries for decades as a result of mono-culture, pollution, climate change and disease. This decline comes at a huge cost to agriculture, wildflowers and trees, and to many parts of the natural world that we take for granted.
