Pretty bloody concerned : Parents worried about children s health after toxic levels of lead found in water Newshub 3/02/2021 Dave Goosselink © Newshub. Watch: Families in Otago towns Karitane and Waikouaiti worried for health of young children after toxic levels of lead found in water. Families of young children in Otago are shocked and worried they ve been living with toxic levels of lead in their water for months. They now have serious health concerns after the levels were found to be four-times what is acceptable. It affects around 1500 people in Waikouaiti and Karitane, about half an hour north of Dunedin, who have been told by the Dunedin City Council to not use tap water for drinking, cooking, or preparing food until further notice as a precaution.

Authorities should have warned about lead in water earlier — residents

Authorities initially thought it might be a localised problem, but Tuesday’s tests results showed lead in the reservoir that supplies both towns. Karitāne School Board of Trustees chairwoman Jane Schofield said the water in the area has never been great and for 12 years she has been driving to and from Dunedin in order to get drinking water. “We have carted water from town [Dunedin] because the water is revolting here. And now to find out that it s actually not even safe to be consuming, it s just horrifying,” Schofield said. Authorities have warned residents not to boil the water, saying that does not remove lead but instead increases its concentration.
