As many Louisianians have been saying this year, the Mardi Gras parades are canceled, but not Mardi Gras. And it is really heartwarming to see how many of our fellow citizens are embracing the 2021 Mardi Gras season in such creative ways.
The historic Spanish Town neighborhood in Baton Rouge typically hosts one of the most fun Mardi Gras parades in the city, but like everyone else, they decided to cancel this year. But their carnival spirit is not dimmed, and they are planning a unique celebration on February 13, the day their parade would have rolled.
Mary Jane Marcantel, Chairman of the Spanish Town Civic Association tells WBRZ that about 20 homeowners in the area will decorate their houses like floats, and hold a drive-by event for the public to participate in by voting for their favorites. Each house is going to get a little ‘pretty in pink’ sign, which is the theme of the parade, with a little number on it because it is a friendly competition.
