Most boyhood dreams are never realized, particularly if you grew up in the 1960s and aspired to be Tarzan of the Apes. But fate or some unexplained force within the mind of Fred Bercovitch spirited him to the lush jungles of Africa to commune with chimps and elephants and eventually brought him before a United Nations conference where he asked delegates from 183 nations to help save the giraffes of his beloved animal kingdom.
Young Fred’s quest to swing from jungle vines with Cheeta and ride Tantor the elephant began when he read the Tarzan books of Edgar Rice Burroughs. And his love for animals began with visits to a marshy area a few blocks from his L.A. home, where he watched the antics of insects, turtles and frogs, and the occasional feral cat. Time passed and he discovered Jane (Denise) in a Best Western reservations center where they both worked the night shift, attending graduate school by day.
