With a berth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship on the line, Alex Massie stepped to the plate with a runner at third in the bottom of the 11th inning.
All she did was deliver for Alabama State.
The sophomore laid down a squeeze back to the pitcher that was enough to score Kindall DeRamus from third with the winning run, giving Alabama State a 7-6 victory.
The win moves Alabama State to the championship game where they will need to be beat twice, and they will await the winner from a trio of teams including Jackson State, Alcorn State, and Southern.

ASU Track & Field: Alabama State has several top-10 finishes on opening day in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State finished the opening day of the UAB Spring Invitational with six top-10 finishes on both the men and women’s side of the meet.
Bridgette Williams led the Lady Hornets with an eighth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 12.52 meters, finishing just behind Birthe’ Franck-Peterson of UAB (12.64 meters). Her teammate, Xiquaria Reliford, fishing 10th in the same event with a distance of 11.92 meters.
On the track, Shamia Jones led Alabama State in the 1500-meters with a time of 5:01.27.
MONTGOMERY, Ala.
| Alabama State travels back to Birmingham this weekend as they are set to compete in the UAB Spring Invitational, hosted at the UAB Track and Field Complex.
The meet features schools from a variety of levels and conferences including Arkansas State, Chattanooga, East Tennessee State, Emory, Hope College, Lipscomb, Point University and Tulane among other teams competing.
Several in-state schools will also be in the meet including Alabama A&M, Auburn-Montgomery, Birmingham Southern, Jacksonville State, Montevallo, Samford, South Alabama, Tuskegee, UAB and West Alabama.
The meet begins at 2 pm on Friday, April 2 with the field events, including the triple jump, javelin throw, pole vault and shotput and will conclude that afternoon with the 300-meter steeplechase. It will resume on Saturday with the women’s hammer throw and the 5000-meters at 9 am and conclude with the 4×400-meter relay at 4 pm.
