NC housing for teachers in Asheville, Durham promise affordable rent

Teacher housing is a concept with a long history in the Tar Heel State. For many, a teacher s salary alone doesn t cut it in the current housing market. An elementary school teacher in Asheville City Schools, Sandi Abernethy, 49, worked a series of part-time jobs outside the classroom - for a catering company, hotels, and a nanny service  to help cover her four-figure monthly rent in the city. This extra employment evaporated when the pandemic hit, and Abernethy found herself in a financial bind. Then in August, just as the school year was starting, she secured a unique living arrangement in the mountains: Abernethy is one of a small number of North Carolina educators whose districts provide them housing at below-market rates.
