Another Jump In Wildfire Numbers

By Carol Thomson Jul 17, 2021 | 2:57 PM The number of active forest fires has risen by 14 since Friday morning, with 151 being reported by the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency as of Saturday afternoon Of those, 35 are not contained, seven are contained, 85 are under assessment, and the SPSA is protecting property on 24 of them. There have been 405 wildfires this year which is almost double the five year average of 211. For an updated look at the numbers, which can change frequently, click here. There are 13 fires of note: The Lock fire is near the communities of St. George’s Hill, Michel Village, Dillon and Buffalo River Dene Nation. The SPSA says the fire is within 5.6 kilometres of Michel Village.

UPDATED: Forest fire near Flin Flon doubles in size

As of 1 pm Friday, Wildfire Management listed the estimated size of the fire as 720 hectares, up from 325 hectares on Wednesday. Two other fires in northern Saskatchewan, both within 100 kilometres of Flin Flon, were also considered “not contained.” A fire located near Granite Lake had expanded to 550 hectares, while a fire northwest of Jan Lake now had an estimated size of 672 hectares. Lightning strikes caused for all three fires, according to Wildfire Management. Another smaller fire located near Pelican Lake is also considered not contained. The fire has an estimated size of two hectares. Fewer fires have been reported on the Manitoba side of the provincial border.
