To Juris, known as Juri to friends and family, teaching wasn’t just a job, it was his life’s work: his pride in his school, his staff, his pupils and their education shone from him and inspired generations. Juris Zarins, devoted husband, father and headteacher at Avenue Middle School for 20 years, died on Friday March 19 aged 72. He had, according to all accounts, tackled his cancer diagnosis with the same upbeat positivity and resolve he had showcased throughout his life.

Ahead of the lifting of all restrictions on June 21, nine venues are to stage trial events from in April and May with before-and-after Covid testing to see whether mass audiences can be brought back safely.  The Events Research Programme (ERP), overseen by the government’s ERP Science Board, will include the FA Cup semi-finals and finals at Wembley Stadium, the Snooker World Championships at Sheffield Crucible Theatre and three 10k runs at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire.

Liverpool s Hot Water club stages a test show with an audience of 300 Liverpool’s Hot Water Comedy Club is to stage an indoor gig next week, as a trial for when lockdown lifts. It is one of several live events, including sporting fixtures, club nights and business conferences, being put on so researchers can monitor and study crowds. Some events - but not the Hot Water night - will require a Covid certificate, with anyone attending having to show they have been vaccinated, have antibodies from a previous infection, or have had a recent negative test for the virus. That would be the first step towards the introduction of controversial vaccine passports to allow resumption of social activities - but only if you have the right papers.
