hello, i m bonnie erbe. welcome to to the contrary, a discussion of news and social trends from diverse perspectives. up first, rape in the peace corps: former peace corps workers spoke out this week against sexual assaults they endured while overseas. several former volunteers told a house foreign affairs subcommittee the peace corp didn t do enough to help them and even blamed the victims. rather than feeling safe and supported, i felt belittled and blamed, then, shortly after i left, the country director, without my permission told the female volunteers i was raped, that it was my fault and that it was always the woman s fault. a 2002 training video says some 35 sexual assaults are reported each year at peace corps sites. the video also says half the attacks involve alcohol-a statistic some say once again blames the victim. congress may soon require the 50-year-old agency to provide more resources, advocates, and health care for victims. more than 1,000 women volunteer
