TOKYO, July 21 (Reuters) - A remorseful Jamie Kermond was booted off Australia s Tokyo Olympics team on Wednesday, after the showjumper tested positive for cocaine.
The 36-year-old from Victoria said his positive A sample result was likely from a single recreational use of the drug during a social event and had no connection with his sport, according to various Australian media outlets. I am extremely upset and remorseful as to what has happened and I accept full responsibility, they quoted him as saying in a statement. I am truly sorry as I have let a lot of people down including my family and team mates.

Australian showjumper and Olympic hopeful Jamie Kermond has been provisionally suspended from competition for testing positive for cocaine.
Kermond, 36, had been named on the Australian equestrian team and was due to make his first Olympics appearance in Tokyo.
Equestrian Australia released a statement saying Kermond had returned a positive A-sample for a metabolite of cocaine following a test conducted by Sport Integrity Australia on June 26th.
The 36-year-old Victorian returned a postive A-sample for the illicit drug prior to the Olympics on Wednesday.
He has been provisionally suspended while further tests are conducted.
Kermond was controversially selected ahead of Australia s top-ranked show jumper after reports he had sponsorship ties to one of the team s selectors.

Equestrian Australia confirmed the news today in a statement on their website. Equestrian Australia has provisionally suspended Jumping athlete Jamie Kermond under the Australian National Anti-Doping Policy 2021 the statement read. The mandatory Provisional Suspension Notice asserts Mr Kermond returned a positive A-sample for a metabolite of cocaine following a test conducted by Sport Integrity Australia on 26 June 2021. Cocaine is prohibited In-Competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the Australian National Anti-Doping Policy 2021
