A-68A iceberg thinning at 2 5 cm per day | Aerospace & Defence News

A-68A’s journey The colossal A-68A iceberg – one of the largest bergs of all time – has drifted slowly northwards since it broke free from the Larsen-C ice shelf in July 2017, and has been floating perilously close to South Georgia for the past month. Latest images reveal that the A-68A iceberg has shattered into multiple pieces, with two large fragments of ice breaking off from the main berg and floating away in the open ocean. Scientists using satellite data have not only been monitoring the iceberg’s journey across the South Atlantic Ocean, but have been studying the iceberg’s ever-changing shape.

Giant Antarctic iceberg A68a is not done yet

BBC News By Jonathan Amos media captionSee how the keel of the giant iceberg has changed over time It might have suffered a big break-up this week, but the iceberg A68a is still carrying substantial bulk. The latest satellite analysis indicates this Antarctic colossus maintains a thickness that could yet see it catch in the waters surrounding the South Atlantic island of South Georgia. If that happens, then worries about the effects the berg could have on the territory s wildlife will resurface. Penguins and seals might be obstructed as they forage for fish and krill. And these predators need to feed not only themselves, but their young as well. South Georgia is entering peak breeding season.
