When President Joe Biden signed the American Rescue Plan, there was a collective sigh of relief among the employed, or those who were unemployed during the COVID-19 pandemic. But the Tax Man still lurks in New York to get his piece of the benefits that helped sustain 3.9 million New Yorkers in 2020. New York state has yet to waive its income tax on unemployment benefits. And as the 2021 tax season enters the final month before the April 15 deadline, there’s no clear pathway to waive those state income taxes, according to a state spokesman.
