(KNSI) The man accused of killing his daughter by setting her trailer on fire goes on trial this week.
On the evening of July 23rd, a 911 call came in from a woman who said a man had come in and was pouring gasoline all over the inside of the trailer where she lived and was going to start a fire. By the time police arrived, the trailer was fully engulfed with 19-year-old Jamey Newport inside. First responders were able to get her out of the home, but she died at Paynesville Hospital.
Her father, 48-year-old John Newport, was arrested at the scene and charged in Stearns County district court with second-degree murder. Prosecutors seek to add an aggravated charge onto the case due to the particular cruelty of the crime.
