[ gunshots ] we are learning new information about the man who opened fire at that congressional baseball practice, shooting house majority whip steve scalise and three others. the shooter, 66-year-old james t. hodge kin son, he s from illinois. he is dead after police heroically engaged in a shootout. the shooter s motive still unclear, but investigators are honing in on his anti-trump social media posts. law enforcement officials telling nbc news, these posts appear to be from the shooter s social media accounts. just two days ago, one post saying, quote, trump is guilty and should go to prison for treason. pete, what are you learning about the shooter? well, we know a fair amount about his back ground. but what we don t know and what the fbi candidly just said a moment ago is they don t know the key question the answers to the key questions. why did he come to washington? what was his miami heotive for
do without it. i m a little shocked how deep it s gone. i have old friends e-mailing me today saying don t fall for this talk how we should all be polite and prer today. we have to make the point that chris collins made about the left being outrageous about trump. really, we have to make it today? why? what s going to change next week, you know what i mean? it s like you go to a funeral. there are a lot of things you could say. an occasion for reflection. on the day of the funeral, i hope there is no funeral in this case except for the shooter. on the day of a shooting we could just not really talk about this. i totally agree with you, bill. because i have a big thing on manners and being polite to each other and treat l people with respec respect. the problem is i ve covered so many of these and it s like we really don t we feel terrible for a day or two and then we re really concerned and we re really going to try to work together and try to figure out solutions. yet here we are
another, maybe the public will start being civil towards one another, too. lawmakers on the democratic baseball team were at practice when they learned about the shooting. their response was to gather in the dug out and pray. with me, congressman joe crowly, member of the democratic baseball team. he was on his way to the practice at the time the republican s practice was under siege by the shooter. thank you for being with me. thank you, greta. obviously unthinkable, tough. i was on the way with doughnuts actually. to the democrats. counter intuitive in terms of baseball practice. but at the end of the practice guys could have a bite to eat before they go back to work. my wife called me, casey called me. she said, where are you? i said, i m on the way to practice. she said, don t go. there s been an incident. what are you talking about? there have been shots fired at a baseball practice. we didn t know where it was at the time. i diverted back to the capital. found it was
there was a lot of hope that it might. so, one other democratic congressman, the coach on the democratic side saying he hopes that this rhetoric will change over time based on the events today. but that, of course, we ll have to see. i think we at the very least have that congressional baseball game set to go on tomorrow as scheduled at nationals park. everybody here clearly felt it was important that game be played as scheduled. so i think you re going to see this sense of community continue through tomorrow. casey, thank you. and for those republican lawmakers, that early morning practice turned into the most terrifying moment of their lives. we were doing batting practice and all of a sudden we heard shots. it was clear pretty quickly that it was a shooter there with a high-powered rifle. after the first shot there was a rapid succession of shots. you know, five or ten shots. he shot at trent kelly, our
down. you know, as an officer and ted knows this, when you confront armed people, that s the first thing that comes out of your mouth, put the gun down. if you have cover, you re behind a vehicle if you want them to drop it. jim, i think you would agree with me that what they are now trying to do is to trace and to try to determine how this shooter got that weapon. how did he pay for it? he was a veteran. he had been in the area from what the investigation had shown for some while. let me repeat. if you see something, say something. all these instances, sometimes that might have helped. but i don t know about this one. anyway, thank you both, gentlemen. coming up, displays of unity, but also some division. lawmakers responding to the shooting in surprising and sometimes not so surprising ways. right after the break. dynamic performance, so you can own the road. track-tuned handling, so you can conquer corners.
