More state prisons to close
COXSACKIE â The majority of the construction at the new Greene County Jail is expected to wrap up next month, as three more state prisons bite the dust.
Gowanda Correctional Facility, Watertown Correctional Facility and the Annex at Clinton Correctional Facility will close by March 30 â an estimated savings of $89 million, according to the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. Clinton Annex is an extension of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, where convicted murderers David Sweat and Richard Matt escaped through a steam pipe in June 2015.
After a 23-day manhunt, Matt was shot and killed, and Sweat was shot and taken into custody. The announcement follows the 2019 closure of two other state prisons, Livingston and Lincoln correctional facilities.
