Matthew James Tumbach, 33, confirmed his plea by telephone on Tuesday in Saskatoon provincial court, electing a judge and jury trial at Saskatoon Court of Queen’s Bench.

Defence lawyer Mike Nolin confirmed the allegations stem from when the complainant was a student at the high school where Tumbach taught.
In June 2020, Tumbach surrendered his teaching certificate after admitting to having a “trusting relationship” with the student.
It started when she was in Grade 11 in 2011 and continued until she graduated in 2013, according to a consensual complaint resolution agreement that Tumbach signed with the Saskatchewan Professional Teachers Regulatory Board.
