Settlement proposal
The BSA is proposing to pay roughly $220 million toward a trust to compensate tens of thousands of former members who say they were abused as Scouts. An additional $300 million may come from a voluntary contribution from local councils, the Boy Scouts said in court documents filed earlier this month; but the local organizations have given no formal commitment.
The number is a fraction of the $1 billion of the organization s estimated value, and a sliver of the value of its subsidiaries, including local councils as well as various trusts and endowments, which USA TODAY estimates could exceed $3.7 billion.
The proposal is part of a reorganization plan put forth by the iconic nonprofit detailing how it intends to handle the massive child sex abuse case that’s threatening its existence – the largest ever involving a single national organization – and emerge as a viable entity.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The deadline to file a sexual abuse claim against the Archdiocese of New Orleans in its federal bankruptcy case expired as of March 1, 2021.
The church filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in May of last year. It said it was necessary because of ongoing budget challenges and the financial strain of decades-old clergy abuse litigation.
We spoke with attorney James Stang, who represents the creditors committee in the bankruptcy proceedings, which includes alleged sexual abuse victims. He said as of about two weeks ago, there were 180 claims against the church on file. He expected to see claims come in until the last minute.

(Reuters) - A U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge on Monday approved The Weinstein Co’s liquidation plan, which sets aside $17 million for women who accused co-founder Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct.
Judge Mary Walrath in Wilmington, Delaware announced her ruling at the conclusion of a remote hearing. She overruled an objection from a handful of women who are looking to pursue appeals of their claims outside of bankruptcy court.
She noted that 83% of sexual misconduct claimants in the bankruptcy “have expressed very loudly that they want closure through acceptance of this plan, that they do not seek to have to go through any further litigation in order to receive some recovery, some possible recompense . although it’s clear that money will never give them that.”
