View Comments
Throughout the month of April, Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTHS) students competed against other career and technical education students from around the state, in both virtual and in-person events, as part of the 2021 New Jersey SkillsUSA Championships. Out of the 73 students from SCVTHS who competed, 54 received medals including 25 gold. The gold medal winners are now eligible to test their skills at the upcoming, virtually held, SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) in June. During the National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC), more than 6,000 career and technical education students will showcase their talents and compete in 100 different trade, technical and leadership fields. All contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations, and labor organizations. The test competencies are set by industry.
Many things have changed since the Thursday Club was formed 100 years ago. Including the Thursday Club.
The San Diego service club, which was founded in February of 1921 by four young married women, is no longer for married women only. There is also a membership group for younger women and evening meetings for members who work during the day.
And in the wake of COVID-19, the Thursday Club meetings are not being held at its picturesque red-roofed clubhouse in Point Loma but on Zoom, with the group’s senior members many of them in their 80s and beyond happily logging on to plan for the future. The club will also be going virtual for today’s centennial celebration, which will be livestreamed on YouTube beginning at 10 a.m. You’d better believe that the members will be there in spirit.
