St. James City Council approves bid for Community Building roof repair

At Tuesday’s St. James City Council meeting, the main topic of discussion was the bids received for the Community Building roof replacement project.
The city presented two options to bidders.
Option one was to repair the roof, sweep off the old stones on the roof, cover the existing roof with a barrier, and then cover the barrier with a rubber roof. Option two was the removal of the old roof to the decking and the replacement of damaged decking to fully replace the roof. Fully replacing the roof would add two layers of insulation and covering with rubber roofing.
Board approves food shelf grant, Local Road Improvement Projects resolutions

At Tuesday s Watonwan County Board meeting, the board approved a grant for the remodeling of the new Watonwan County Food Shelf and multiple resolutions for Local Road Improvement Projects (LRIP).
The Watonwan County Food Shelf was able to purchase Mayberry Lanes through a grant, but work is needed inside of the former bowling alley. The current space for the food shelf is inside the Watonwan County Resource Center and is only 600 square feet. The new facility will be 6,000 square feet. Right now, people feel as though they don t even know where we re at, said Watonwan County Food Shelf Director Katherine Petty. We typically see 75-80 families a month and we do expect with being more in the open that we will probably see an increase in families.
Dollar General coming to St. James in old Shopko building

Dollar General recently completed a purchase of the former Shopko building on First Avenue South, and construction has started for the new Dollar General location.
The new store is approximately 9,800 square feet and will employ 6-10 employees. Our customers are at the center of all that we do, and meeting customers’ needs is Dollar General’s top priority when choosing store locations, said Angela Petkovic with Dollar General public relations. In selecting store sites, we take a number of factors into consideration, carefully evaluating each potential new store location to ensure we can continue to meet our customers’ price, value, and selection needs. We further strive to provide convenience for customers who may not have affordable nearby retail options.
Luciana Strong Saintettes dance team rallies around Luciana Villalobos fight

For Alexis Herrera, a junior at St. James High School and a member of the Saintettes dance team, and her family, the last year has not been easy.
Just over a year ago, her mom, Luciana Villalobos, was diagnosed with a benign tumor behind her eye and underwent surgery to remove the tumor. Last month at a checkup, it was discovered that the tumor returned. Last year was hard because that s when it had just started, said Herrera. Knowing that she has to go through it again really sucks.
