CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (WWSB) - An internal investigation into an inmateâs suicide at the Charlotte County Jail has ended in the termination of a corrections officer.
An internal investigation into Charlotte County Sheriffâs Office corrections deputy Mark DeHart began Jan. 13. This investigation stemmed from the suicide of inmate James Palmucci on Oct. 26, 2020.
Internal Affairs staff members and Sheriff Bill Prummell determined Dehart failed to effectively determine if lifesaving intervention was appropriate and provided false testimony of events during the night Palmucci died.
At the conclusion of an internal investigation that began on January 13 of this year, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office decided to remove one of its correction deputies.
Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell provided a statement about the investigation regarding DeHart. “This deputy violated his oath and demonstrated a lack of integrity. The actions and inactions of former CDFC DeHart were unacceptable and do not reflect the high standards of this agency. Honesty is of utmost importance to me. Lying will unquestionably lead to your dismissal,” Prummel said.

This will make the third inmate death, almost all exactly a month apart, since October.
Doug James Gow, 57, was found alone and unresponsive in his cell with fabric around his neck, deputies said.

Jail staff tried to revive James but couldn’t, according to CCSO.
Deputies said they make rounds checking on inmates every hour at the jail.
Major crimes detectives are investing the death.
On November 20, another inmate, Hailee Mathews, 25, was found alone in her cell with fabric around her neck, deputies said.
