Host ive known Alan Greenspan for many, many years, and we worked together closely when i was his vice chair, and hes a complicated man, and these were complicated times, and i think you got it about right. But lets start at the beginning. You wrote interestingly about the influence of his parents. Could you talk a little bitt about that on his career choices . Guest yeah. Alan greenspan had an unusual upbringing in the sense that raised in the 1930s, he was the child of a single mom. His father left his mother when alan was only 3 and then was this sort of distant figure, unreliable, who would sometimes say he would come and see his son and then not show up. In and i think that probably reinforced a talent alan had to live inside his own head, and that was further reenforced by his mother. First of all, were talking about the 30s, the depression, so she had to earn a living. Ng wasnt so easy. She worked in a Department Store in manhattan, so he was left
