The thing that keeps White Sox general manager Rick Hahn on edge during the warm, sunny and sometimes breezy bliss that is spring training is a text message from trainer James Kruk. “It’s a lousy way to go through life, but part of this gig is to be worried about what could go wrong,” Hahn said recently. So far, Kruk has not been a bearer of bad texts. Aside from a tweaked calf that hardly affected right-hander Michael Kopech and a minor groin issue that slowed righty Matt Foster early in camp, the pitching staff appears to be healthy with Opening Day 15 days away.

The White Sox also promoted James Kruk to head athletic trainer and Brett Walker to director of rehabilitation. Narron, 65, will serve as the Major League catching coordinator or catching coach, working with new pitching coach Ethan Katz and younger backstops such as Zack Collins, Yermín Mercedes and Seby Zavala as part of manager Tony La Russa’s staff. He managed five seasons in the majors with Texas (2001-02) and Cincinnati (2005-07), served as a bench coach with Baltimore (1993), the Red Sox (2003, ’20), the Reds (2004-05), Milwaukee (2011-15) and Arizona (2017-19), and as a third-base coach for eight seasons with Baltimore (1994) and Texas (1995-2001).
