Yellow Jackets slowed down by Hardin-Simmons, 41-14

ABILENE – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets carried the American Southwest Conference’s No. 1 offense into Shelton Stadium Saturday, where the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys – in possession of the league’s top-rated defense – emerged with a 41-14 victory. Howard Payne (1-2) entered the contest averaging 45.5 points and 572.5 yards per game, but was limited to a pair of touchdowns and 282 total yards. Hardin-Simmons (3-0), which owned the ASC’s second-best offense prior to the contest, produced 601 yards – 324 rushing and 277 passing – and tallied all of its points in the first three quarters. After spotting the Cowboys the first 27 points, the Yellow Jackets scored a second-quarter touchdown on a 15-yard run by Billy Reagins, and added a third-quarter score on a 5-yard carry by quarterback Landon McKinney.

Texas Lutheran spoils Bachtel s debut at HPU, 39-38

The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets never trailed until 1:47 remained in the spring football season opener, where a late touchdown and two-point conversion by the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs spoiled head coach Jason Bachtel’s debut at his alma mater. Texas Lutheran, an 8-2 squad a year ago, escaped with a 39-38 victory over the Yellow Jackets at Gordon Wood Stadium, snapping a three-game win streak for Howard Payne. The Yellow Jackets were coming off a 5-5 campaign, their best record since 2006. Trailing 38-31 with less than two minutes left, TLU quarterback Seth Cosme scored on a 1-yard run to bring the Bulldogs within a point. Texas Lutheran then opted for the two-point conversion, also converted by Cosme on a sprint to the pylon.
