SHANGHAI - A special event was held here on Saturday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Ping-Pong Diplomacy between China and the United States.
At the conclusion of the 31st World Championships in Nagoya, Japan, at the invitation of the Chinese table tennis team, the US table tennis team arrived on April 10, 1971, to commence their visit to China, becoming the first US group to visit since the founding of the People s Republic of China in 1949.
The Chinese team paid a return visit the following year. The mutual visits broke the ice in two decades of estranged Sino-US relations and eventually led to the normalization of bilateral ties.

Thirteen US citizens residing in Shanghai and neighboring provinces and 13 Chinese amateur table tennis players partnered one another to play friendly doubles matches at the International Table Tennis Federation Museum and China Table Tennis Museum in Shanghai on Saturday afternoon.
The friendly competition was held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Ping-Pong Diplomacy, an event in 1971 that saw 15 members of the US table tennis delegation visit China. That was the first time in 22 years that a US group visited China.

BEACHWOOD, Ohio Plans for the sale of nearly half of the city’s massive service department garage are still on, but undergoing modifications, as City Council approved Monday (March 1) legislation that includes addendums to the original sale agreement.
