Convicted fraudster Julian Hofstra, read an excerpt of a recording he claimed to have of Daphne Caruana Galizia murder middleman Melvin Theuma to a police officer investigating an alleged leak from the police data system, a court was told on Tuesday.
The information was given during testimony by Superintendent James Grech, in the compilation of evidence against Inspector Elton Taliana, who has been suspended from the corps on half-pay since January, for allegedly leaking personal data about Hofstra to lawyer Charles Mercieca, one of Fenech’s defence team. The inspector denies the claims.
In February the police denied reports that they had offered immunity from prosecution to the Dutchman, who claims to have evidence on the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. They denied offering Hofstra some form of legal immunity in return for recordings of Melvin Theuma.

Mackay athletes smashed the medal tally at the annual Bowen Carnival, walking away with 80 golds and a swag of personal bests.
Mackay Athletics Club president James Grech said the sugar city fielded the second largest team going into the competition, and came home at the top of the medal count with 149 overall.
Members also achieved 57 personal bests with Mackay dominating the 800m and 1500m track races.
“There were lots of placegetters and it is all about achieving your personal bests and if you can get a first, second or this, that’s a bonus,” Grech said.

A court will decide the fate of several gold items seized as evidence in a double murder in Sliema last year.
The third suspect in the murder of Christian Pandolfino and Ivor Maciejowski, 30 year-old Jesper Kristiansen was back in the dock as the compilation of evidence in the murder case against him continued this morning.
The two victims were shot dead at their home in Locker Street, Sliema on 18 August last year, in what is thought to be a botched burglary.
