Feed protein from grass: Do green biorefineries have a future in Ireland?

A grass biorefinery project run over two years in Ireland has just published its final results, with several co-products produced showing great promise for dairy and pig diets. The goal of the Irish Department of Agriculture initiative, funded by the EU innovation partnership EIP-Agri, was to demonstrate the use of small-scale biorefineries to convert freshly harvested grass into a range of high value products; it was born out of the idea of establishing a bottom up, multi-actor approach to addressing challenges in the Irish agricultural sector, combining consortia which include farmers as well as researchers to tackle issues.
