chris, the work out here started just before day break. cranes were brought in to do some heavy lifting and you can see what they re doing behind me right now. after they picked up the locomotive and put it on the track they started moving each of the seven passenger cars that derailed. they will pick up each and put them on the track in an effort to reconstruct the accident scene. they ll try to figure out what caused the train to crash. overnight the names of all four passengers killed by the metro north commuter train crash sunday were released. police identified 54-year-old donna smith. donna was a wonderful person. she was kind, neighborly, friendly. reporter: 35-year-old ahn kisook, 59-year-old james ferrari and this man, 58-year-old father of four james lovell. i ll remember him as having dignity and determination and being, you know, a wonderful father. reporter: three of them ejected from the train, its cars
days. they re investigating speed and human error as possibilities. speed is being looked into. there is a sharp curve in the tracks and just before the area that was 30 miles an hour, the zone where the incident happened, it was 70 miles an hour. there was a sharp dropoff. take a listen. we don t know what the train speed was. we will learn that from the vehicle event recorders. incidentally, we have recovered the event recorder off the cab car. we have downloaded the data off the locomotive. we ve not had a chance to analyze it or verify it at this point. reporter: we re getting a look at some of the victims. james lovely, a 58-year-old father of four. he was headed to rockefeller center, to prepare for the annual tree lighting. a a 4-year-old paralegal. and a 35-year-old nurse. and james ferrari, a 59-year-old. at last check, an additional 63 people were hurt.
know what happened. they just need to figure out the why. it s an investigation that could still take some time, but at least they have the beginning pieces, joy. and we can hear the commute still going on, even right now. and we don t want to lose sight of the fact, there were four people who lost their lives in this train derailment. 59-year-old james ferrari of montrose, new york. 35-year-old ahn kisook from queens. don smith from new york. and 58-year-old jim lovell, a member of our nbc news family. he worked as an audio technician for the today show. and there are also 60 people injured. what do we know about the injured? reporter: yeah, we did hear from most of the hospitals where those injured were taken to, and we know at least 27 have been treated. and released. there are still at least three in critical condition tonight. and others still admitted in the hospital. so still a lot of families waiting to see how this is going to play out.
