mogul in the world. by the end of the hacking scandal, james is a complete pariah. his effort to buy bskyb failed. and it s decided that he s going to be demoted. he s gonna be sent back to new york as a co-chief operating officer. but, in classic rupert murdoch fashion he will not be the one to break the news to his son himself. he asks elizabeth to do it. it did not go well and she and james didn t speak for at least a year afterward. you would imagine, in a situation like this, a father s instinct might be to protect his son, but james is really thrown under the bus by his father, betrayed by his father. it s a humiliating and devastating period for him. james will carry this with him going forward, this hurt, this feeling that he was left out on his own to take all these slings and arrows and that resentment, as we understand it,
the surveillance and all that sort of stuff. hacking people s mobile phone messages, hacking their landlines and that s why i used private detectives, people like glenn mulcaire, because they had ways of finding people. the bottom line was the law didn t really matter really, as long as you got the story. a popular defense for murdoch supporters was, we weren t the only ones doing this, everyone was doing this, which in fact might be true, but that didn t make it any less illegal. i mean it was a patent violation of journalistic ethics as well as the law. the editor is the most important person in the building. and the reporter who actually goes out and does the story. oh yes, but it s the editor who appoints him and finds him and trains him.
thank you. so this was of course an enormously entertaining moment, but what it meant ultimately was that the headlines the next day were not about all the things that the murdochs said and didn t say during this hearing, but in fact about this shaving cream pie being thrown in rupert s face. rupert murdoch appeared to show his 80 years, but most say the murdochs gave as good as they got. the general consensus here is that the murdochs emerged more or less unscathed and the assault would swing at least a little public sympathy their way. i think what the impact of it on rupert was the humiliation, you know, that he had been caught, he had been shown to be a great deal less ethical than he thought he was. but, does it affect his day-to-day life, does it affect his freedom? of course not. and rupert has skin like a rhinoceros and a memory that s so short, he can get over this very quickly. and he did.
