New features and more information on the new Crime Stoppers of Fayette County website

Crime Stoppers of Fayette County has upgraded its website to better serve the community thanks to a grant. For years, the organization that pays up to $1,000 for tips leading to an arrest of unsolved crimes in the area had a free, basic website that limited the amount of information the nonprofit was able to share with the citizens. They also maintained an active Facebook page seeking tips about community crimes. “Our biggest strength was our Facebook page,” said Fayette County Sheriff James Custer, a board member with the organization. Whatever information law enforcement sent had to be posted on social media because they were unable to share it on the website.

State initiative will send Narcan to county prisons in PA

Fayette County will be part of a new initiative that provides Narcan at no cost to county jails across the state. During a Wednesday meeting of the Fayette County Prison Board, Sheriff James Custer said the Pennsylvania Sheriffs Association partnered with the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) and Vital Strategies to increase Narcan access for those returning to communities after incarceration. The sheriffs’ association, under a grant received from Bloomberg Philanthropies and Vital Strategies, will provide outreach, assistance and training to individuals working and placed in county correctional facilities on the use of Narcan for drug overdoses. Custer, who is president of the sheriffs’ association, said the county prison can place orders, and Narcan will be sent to the prisons at no cost to the counties. He added that, in Fayette County, the supply sent to the prison won’t affect the supply with the Fayette County Drug and Alcohol Commission.

Groundbreaking takes place on new Fayette County Prison site

The start of a multi-year construction plan was marked Thursday with the groundbreaking for a new Fayette County Prison. Representatives from municipal, county, state and federal government as well as project team members were on hand at the former Army Reserve Training Center on McClellandtown Road in Uniontown, the site for the new Fayette County Prison. “Our leadership right now is laser focused on this goal,” said Muriel Nuttall, executive director of the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce. Nuttall said the site that was once of importance for national security will be a place of importance for local security. Existing buildings on the site will be demolished and replaced with a 114,500 square-foot, four-story facility that will have 170 cells and 330 beds.
