The Fulton County sheriff says moving inmates to South Georgia and Mississippi is a necessary step to make the jail safe, but local activists don't agree with his plan.
Fulton County's chairman says he wants to close the North Jail Annex in Alpharetta to help stop the transfer of inmates to private prisons in South Georgia and Mississippi. However, the idea has not been officially proposed and would need to be approved by Fulton commissioners.
The Fulton County Jail is holding hundreds more people than it was designed to have the capacity for. This year alone, 10 inmates have died in custody.
