Ames is moving quickly to apply for a reenacted statewide program surpassing usual public input as the need for a new indoor aquatic center nears.
The Ames City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to apply to the Reinvestment District Program for areas around Ames’ downtown, between Clark and Kellogg avenues. The funding could help pay for an aquatic center as the current 50-year-old municipal pool, shared with Ames High School, is set to be demolished in 2022.
“It’s an unusual opportunity to take advantage of some funding that’s out there,” City manager Steve Schainker said Tuesday. “We need a new indoor aquatic center. We need it in a short order, and this opens an avenue that I hope all citizens will understand we have to expedite this process. So the normal input session we have, we won’t be able to do that.”
