Following concerns raised by residents and police, a council traffic survey identified 25 hotspot areas where road signs are being ignored more than a hundred times a day on average. Under the moving traffic contraventions (MTC) programme, drivers ignoring signs at these locations will be caught on camera and posted a fine.

After residents and police raised concerns, a council traffic survey identified 25 hotspot areas in the borough where road traffic signs are being ignored more than a hundred times a day. Now under the Moving Traffic Contraventions (MTC) Programme drivers already risking a fine by ignoring signs will be caught on CCTV at these locations and sent a fixed penalty notice. The town hall is consulting on creating low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs) in zones around Forest Gate, Maryland and Stratford. LTNs aim to improve air quality and road safety by reducing traffic using planters, bollards or cameras to stop entry at some junctions.

Councillors were urged to reconsider Newham s plan to introduce an emissions based charge at a council meeting on Monday, December 14. Resident Liam Adam said: One argument made about [the council s] new  tax is that every other borough has a similar charge. The main problem: the other boroughs didn t make a promise to residents that the first car permit would always be free. You can all pretend that was a previous council, but the vast majority of Newham residents, who own a car, don t see it that way.
