why nobody stepped? in? joining mess is jamani williams, whose district is right next to where the attack took place. thank you for being here. thank you for having me. obviously this is extremely disturbing, but what can we make it a fact that no one stepped? obviously it s deplorable. i was horrified, then i tried to step back to make sure i can put it in some perspective. i ve been trying to figure out whether or not these are happening more often. when i was going to school these things happened we heard about it we witnessed it or is it so used we re being desensitized. what struck me is the fact that absolutely no one, including adults did nothing at all. more and more females are getting more involved. there was a similar video in long island where it was white young men doing it so i want to

some officers turned their backs to the mayor at ramos s funeral as well. we have den never sharrif, a 30-year-old police detective. also with us is new york city council member jamani williams. thank you so much for both of you to be here a conversation about this. thank you. officer sharrif as a man who wears the blue uniform, you ve been in the service some 30 years, you are also obviously african-american i m curious what your reaction is sir, to seeing your fellow officers turning their back to the mayor of the city. i think the top lines of cnn should be that the officers that have lost their lives for their communities, the dedication that they gave for their communities, i think that should be the front page of newspapers and cnn rather than to see all of the talk of what the officers have done. that s taking away from the lives and dedication that the
mainly an anti-cop sentiment, i think people of color want justice and what they re seeing now is they re not feeling as though justice is being served in the communities. i think that when we look at it from an african-american perspective, we see black officers standing in the middle of the road. the community expects for us to stand up for them and yet the police department is looking for us to stand up for them and yet we have problems right within the police department with discrimination and other issues. i have yet to hear from the guardian s association in new york which was a member of the national black police association when i was president of it and i think blacks black officers play a major role in our communities because we re out there on the front line and yet we re having discussion but you re not talking to black officers who are the rank and file officers who deal with the impoverished communities and the black and latino communities. we re out there daily and we
against the police department. everyone here with me tonight is for the nypd, and that s a clear message that we re sending. so, how does new york begin to try to heal from the growing divides and come together as a city? let s bring in our panel. new york city councilman, jamani williams, former nypd detector gill alba, former nypd detective, harry hauck. and special correspondent for the daily beast michael daley. it feels like new york is splintering, i suppose maybe that s one way of putting it, people are falling into different camps, different sides, even the leadership. how bad is it? what can you do? i think for the moment, what we all should be doing is praying and supporting these families that there were two human beings that were assassina assassinated, executed summar y summarily. there s no one who can say anything about that except we need to support those families.
