Like many people across the globe, Iranians have been spooked by WhatsApp s recent announcement that it would be sharing data with parent company Facebook. In response, they have been flooding to the messaging app s rival, Signal.
This month, Signal became the most-downloaded app in Iran. On Monday, it was suddenly blocked and removed from local Android markets.
Ever since Signal simultaneously hit #1 on the Play Store and #1 on the government s block list, we ve been working around censorship.
Unable to stop registration, the IR censors are now dropping all Signal traffic.

Iranian telecom minister returns to office after appearing before prosecutor Thursday 21 January 2021 | 16:07 CET | News Iran s judiciary has released the country s telecom minister on bail on 20 January after he was summoned for prosecution by the general prosecutor, Asharq Al-Awsat reported. Jamal Hadian, a spokesman for the telecommunications ministry, said Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi was released and had already returned to his office. The office of the general prosecutor had summoned Jahromi for prosecution over his refusal to block Instagram and other foreign social media messaging systems, according to earlier reports.
