The government says the national plan will decrease childcare fees by 50% by 2022. By 2026, daily childcare costs are to be $10. Alberta’s pilot project by the former NDP government had the childcare cost at $25 a day at designated places, however it was cancelled by the UCP in 2020. Meanwhile, some local families paying more than $1,000 monthly per kid for childcare. “You ask yourself if it’s even worth going back to work, because the amount you’re making almost doesn’t outweigh the amount you’re paying to send your child to early learning,” says Medicine Hat’s Tracy Studer, who currently pays $2,200 a month for her two children.
