(CIJ pic) PETALING JAYA: Civil society organisations staged a protest today to defend the right to freedom of expression in the wake of the anti-fake news emergency ordinance that came into force last week. A 15-strong flash mob, representing members of the Freedom of Expression Cluster, a coalition of NGOs with an interest in defending free speech, marched from Taman Tugu along Jalan Parlimen until nearly the entrance to Parliament house. “We decided to organise today’s event to reclaim our civic space and object to the ‘fake news’ ordinance adopted by the government,” said Wathshlah Naidu, executive director of the Centre for Independent Journalism.

KUALA LUMPUR: A businessman was arraigned in the Sessions Court here today on charges of committing a criminal breach of trust involving RM145,680, two years ago. Tau Fook Yuen, 52, pleaded not guilty after the charges against him were read before Judge Kamarudin Kamsun. He was charged with committing the crime at the Parliament House in Jalan Parlimen, Sentul between June 7 to Dec 1, 2019, under Section 406 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and whipping, and possible fine upon conviction. The complainant, in this case, is the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy), Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup.

AGC rejects third representation by Ahmad Maslan to drop charges

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): Pontian MP Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan (pic) failed for the third time in his attempt to get the court to drop the charges against him for failing to declare RM2mil received from Datuk Seri Najib Razak to the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) and giving false statements to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). This followed a decision by the Attorney General s Chamber (AGC) in rejecting the third representation submitted by Ahmad in relation to the two charges made against him. Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Noor Hafizan Zakaria informed the court on the AGC’s decision during the case management before Sessions Court Judge Ahmad Kamar Jamaludin.
