Former Texas offensive lineman Willie Tyler transfers to Syracuse Max Freund | Staff Photographer Facebook Subscribe to our sports newsletter here Texas offensive lineman Willie Tyler has transferred to Syracuse, he announced on his Twitter on Thursday. Tyler, a 6-foot-7, 335-pound lineman, did not play in his two years with the Longhorns. He played a season at Iowa Western Community College before moving to Texas prior to the 2019 season. Tyler redshirted that season and opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19. Tyler joins transfer Jakob Bradford on SU’s offensive line, which struggled last season and ranked 113 out of 127 FBS teams, according to Pro Football Focus. Tyler will play under O-line coach Mike Schmidt, who recently moved to Syracuse after eight years at San Diego State.

San Diego State offensive line coach Mike Schmidt is expected to join Syracuse’s coaching staff as the Orange’s new O-Line coach, according to a report from Pete Thamel of Yahoo! Sports. Schmidt has spent the last eight years as the O-Line coach at SDSU. He will replace Mike Cavanaugh, who left for Arizona State in January. Schmidt has been involved with the Aztecs on and off the field since 2005. He played both offensive and defensive line at SDSU from 2005-2008 before becoming a volunteer and, later, a graduate assistant with the program. Feb 3, 2021 Syracuse picked up a significant addition to the roster when class of 2021 junior college offensive lineman Jakob Bradford signed with the Orange over Virginia Tech on Wednesday. Bradford is a 6-5, 300 pound offensive lineman from Iowa Western and can play tackle as well as guard. He brings needed maturity and experience to the offensive line that will provide significant depth because of his versatility.  Syracuse had been recruiting Bradford for a while before offering in mid January. That was Bradford s first power five offer, but Virginia Tech extended one of their own 17 days later. The offer along with a phone call with the Hokies staff had Bradford weighing his options. Prior to the Tech offer, Syracuse was in the driver s seat.
