The Bison lost the lead with just under four minutes remaining in the game

HUNTSVILLE, TX – Eric Schmid’s 6-yard touchdown run with 3:39 remaining in the game lifted No. 2 seed Sam Houston to a 24-20 victory over North Dakota State in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Football Championship on Sunday, May 2, before a crowd of 4,984 at Bowers Stadium.
North Dakota State finished its season 7-3 overall with its 11th consecutive FCS quarterfinal appearance. Sam Houston (8-0) advanced to host the winner of Sunday evening’s quarterfinal between North Dakota and James Madison.
NDSU scored on a safety in the second quarter and a kickoff return and punt return in the third quarter to come back and tie the game 17-17. Jake Reinholz’s 33-yard field goal with 8:17 left in the game gave NDSU a 20-17 lead.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas Eric Schmid threw for 227 yards and a touchdown, and his 6-yard touchdown run with 3:39 left helped send second-seeded Sam Houston State past defending FCS champion North Dakota State 24-20 on Sunday.
The Bearkats (8-0) advance to face the winner between No. 3-seed James Madison and North Dakota in the semifinals. Sam Houston State’s win gives it a 15-0 all-time playoff record in home games as it searches for its first-ever championship.
The loss snaps North Dakota State’s (7-3) FCS string of nine straight semifinals’ appearances.
On the previous drive, North Dakota State put together a 20-play, 60-yard drive that lasted almost 10 minutes which ended with Jake Reinholz’s 33-yard field to give North Dakota State its first lead at 20-17 with 8:17 left.

North Dakota State’s spring season came to a close on Sunday with a 24-20 loss against Sam Houston in the quarterfinal round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.
The Bearkats scored 10 points off 3 Bison turnovers and limited NDSU to a season-low 229 yards of offense from Elliott T. Bowers Stadium.
Sam Houston quarterback Eric Schmid passed for 227 yards and 1 touchdown while adding 36 yards rushing and 1 touchdown.
Cam Miller went 7-of-18 for 90 yards passing and 2 interceptions for NDSU.
Sam Houston (8-0 overall) will host James Madison or North Dakota in the semifinals.
NDSU (7-3 overall) fails to make the semifinals for the first time since the 2010 postseason.
North Dakota State is set to play in their first road postseason contest since December 11, 2010.
That’s 3,795 days since the Bison played at Eastern Washington in the 2010 Football Championship Subdivision quarterfinals, losing to the Eagles 38-31 in overtime.
On Sunday, NDSU (7-2 overall) plays at Sam Houston (7-0 overall) in Huntsville, Texas for a quarterfinal contest against the Bearkats.
The Bison have been nearly unbeatable in the FCS playoffs with a 37-2 record. Sam Houston has been on the losing side in four postseason meetings. Twice in Frisco, Texas at the national championship in 2011 and 2012 and twice in the FCS semifinals in 2014 and 2017 at the Fargodome.
