Salem CRA amendment headed to council | News, Sports, Jobs

mgreier@salemnews.net SALEM – A proposal to make additional residential areas in the city eligible for a tax abatement on new construction is headed to city council. The Economic Development Committee agreed Tuesday to recommend city council change the boundaries of the Community Reinvestment Area to include sections previously excluded as a way to attract more new housing, which is lacking in the city. “I don’t see much downside to it, if any at all,” Councilman Jake Gano said. In February, Gano brought up the idea of reviewing the CRA program so that certain housing developments shut out during the last revision in 2017 could be included.

Salem panel: Allow parking on front driveways | News, Sports, Jobs

MARY ANN GREIER SALEM A council committee is recommending parking be allowed in an existing, original residential driveway in a front yard, with or without an existing garage, citywide. The Rules & Ordinances Committee voted last week to add the clause as an exception to 361.16, the city ordinance which prohibits front yard parking. Now the issue will be presented to city council for a decision. Councilwoman Cyndi Baronzzi Dickey, who chairs the committee, said the issue came up after someone complained about a building project on Southeast Boulevard. When the zoning officer checked the residence, he found that the homeowner was enclosing the garage to create additional living space in the house and never got a permit.
