On April 8, 2021, the Pulitzer Center education team was in conversation with Teacher Fellows Jairus Hallums and Nikysha Gilliam. Jairus and Nikysha shared how they leverage global, underreported news stories to foster student inquiry around representation, identity, and community, and tips for navigating these themes in your own classroom.
Gilliam is a native of Pontiac, Michigan, and a high school educator. A graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in English, and a masters in educational administration from California State University, Northridge, Gilliam is a former Fulbright Fellow and a current doctoral student at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California. She has been teaching for 23 years and this year teaches ninth and tenth-grade English and English Language Development.
