Evaluating the Colorado Rockies at Spring Training s midpoint

Good morning and happy snowpocalypse, Denver. Today would be a good day for watching baseball players on a sun-soaked field, what with the snow and the switch to daylight savings time throwing off everyone’s schedules, but alas we’ll have to wait until tomorrow for another spring training broadcast. Anyway, for those of you in the heavy-snowfall area, be safe over the next few days. Today will mark the half-way point of the Rockies Spring Training schedule, which invites us to attempt to draw conclusions from ridiculously small samples take a look at where the team stands right now and what we need to be on the lookout for over the next two weeks.

Researchers study onion crop s nitrogen needs

Todd Fitchette Jairo Diaz is researching fresh market onions in the southern California desert for better nutrient management practices. UC scientists want to learn the nitrogen needs of the plant to avoid overapplication and leaching into the soil. Moving fresh-market onion production to 80-inch beds in the desert will require a new approach to irrigation, one that researchers reveal may work. Jairo Diaz, director of the University of California s Desert Research and Extension Center in Holtville, Calif., is in his fifth year of studying the response of drip irrigation and various rates of nitrogen applications in onions grown for commercial production in the state. The trial compares Terena variety onions on 40-inch and 80-inch beds under the same irrigation and fertilizer application regimes.
