In-person Travis Mills Walk-athon to return May 5

AUGUSTA A labor of love and service at St. Michael School will return next week after shifting to become a virtual event last year because of the pandemic.
The annual St. Michael School and Travis Mills Walk-athon will be held inside and outside the school on Wednesday, May 5. In 2020, an exercise challenge was held in its place, with students and staff participating from home.
This year, the school community, which has enjoyed in-person learning all year, will participate in the walk-athon in person as well, raising money for the Travis Mills Foundation through pre-obtained pledges.
Island schools given counterfeit masks
BAR HARBOR Administrators at Conners Emerson School learned this week that it, along with other schools in the Mount Desert Island Regional School System, had received counterfeit N95 masks from the Maine Department of Education. The masks were not distributed to, or used by, staff or students.
“You may have heard about the many N95 masks being recalled…approximately half of what we’ve received have been recalled,” said Principal Barbara Neilly during her report at Monday’s school committee meeting.
“We received many boxes of N95 masks from MDOE…I don’t have the exact number, said Neilly. Neilly said the school was contacted by MDOE to look at the serial numbers for the boxes and to separate ones identified as possibly being counterfeit. “But it’s also important to note that we have plenty of N95 masks that were not identified.”
About 161,000 of the possibly fake N95 respirators have been distributed to school nurses, health care facilities and state workers in Maine since November and are now part of a nationwide recall and replacement effort.

Maine’s Division of Procurement Services has notified respirator recipients and initiated a process to replace the masks as supply allows. About 2 million of the respirators with lot numbers subject to the recall remain at state warehouses.
