a lot of times if you show force, the inmate will tend to tone down a little bit. while the response to this incident might look extreme, jail officials say it was by the book. because of the dangerous situation that s involved here, the ert was sent in. he s throwing weapons at them. he s throwing the mop buckets at the deputies. the deputies descend the stairs, fire their munitions at him to get him to comply. it s a sort of baton type of round made out of rubber. it s intended to strike him, cause pain, and hopefully he ll lie down and comply. the initial shot struck him. he continued through it. they came down the stairs. he had that other weapon that was strapped to his waist. and as you can see in the film, he kind of turns on his side and pulls that out. once he does that, they again fire him with the .40 caliber, strike the inmate on the side. the inmate then decides it s best to call it quits and lays flat on his stomach with his arms extended. we were able to enter and ta

captain randy demery says he has seen a lot of change over the course of his 25 years with the kent county jail in grand rapids. i m very proud i came to this jail in a time where the corrections industry in general, but even this jail in particular, was moving away from a culture of violence and a culture that demeaned the inmate population, and moving towards a culture that treats everybody with dignity and respect and humanely and understanding that the inmates have their own set of problems that they present us with, but they re all humans and they all need to be cared for as human beings. jail officials say one way they do that is to be responsive to inmate reports with harassment. he is one of the inmates who wrote a kite against sutherland. he s in the same cell.

he cannot make it housed with he cannot rec with anyone. and so we had to do something about that. the first step was housing gallop in a one-man segregation cell. now, even though he has an open case in a nearby court, jail officials have appealed to the state prison system to take him back where he can be better managed. we don t like to keep inmates in segregation for extended periods of time. we know that it s not good for their mental health. we have been working on a transfer for him to the state for about four months. and they said no twice, and this past time they said yes. sometimes they will accept inmates if they are extremely violent here and there s nowhere else where we can put them. gallop will now transfer to state prison while he awaits trial on his charges. how long he ll stay depends on the outcome of his case.
