For me tramping is an obsession and getting to Mid King in 2015 was a highlight. My interest in tramping began in my teens but it was not until I was 40 that I took it seriously. Seriously overweight, I initially struggled but once I had lost 15 kilos I soon found myself exploring the furthermost parts of the Tararuas.

My back is now held together by metal but it has not stopped me from returning to tramping. The Tararuas are known for bad weather, deep mud and steep ridges, but I was never happier than when I had a pack on my back. Reaching places like Cattle Ridge Hut, with its beautiful views over northern Hawkes Bay, was life changing.
