A Hamilton high school board of trustees is facing WorkSafe charges over the death of a 17-year-old student on a school trip. Lawyer Caitlyn Frost appeared on behalf of Melville High School’s board of trustees in the Hamilton District Court on Wednesday. The board is facing charges relating to Jaden Chhayrann’s death. Jaden was on a class field trip to Waihī Beach on February 21, 2020, when he was caught in a rip while swimming and pulled out to sea, about 12.30pm.

His body found near Whiritoa Beach a couple of weeks later. Melville High s facing WorkSafe charges and has entered a not guilty plea. But, today WorkSafe s prosecutor told a judge both parties want to enter into an enforceable undertaking , which could see the school avoid a conviction.

Photo: 123RF Jaden Chhayrann, 17, from Melville High School drowned after being caught in a rip while swimming at Waihi Beach while on a geography trip in February 2020. His body was swept out to sea and found 10 days later at Whiritoa, north of Waihi Beach. The school is charged with exposing an individual to risk of harm, under Health and Safety at Work legislation. The charge was laid by WorkSafe. The case has been adjourned until a review hearing in November. Tags:
