The Regents of the University of California have approved construction plans for a new UC Riverside School of Business building that will provide more instructional and administrative space to meet growing enrollment demand. The vote, which took place July 20, allows the campus to move forward with construction this fall. The new building is expected to be completed by fall 2024.

As students show up for move-in day at UC Riverside, they are arriving to a campus that –from a housing perspective – is reinvented from the pre-pandemic campus of two Septembers ago.
Two residential communities – Dundee Residence Hall and the North District Apartments – are open for students, significantly alleviating the space crunch UC Riverside has faced since its student population began rocketing in the 2000s. UCR has more than doubled its population of 20 years ago, and is projected to have 35,000 students by 2035.

Though the campus closure has driven students home, UC Riverside has continued on many of its construction projects. There are currently eight active projects being built on campus: the Pierce Hall renovation, Student Success Center, the North District, Parking Structure 1, electrical infrastructure improvements, the off-campus UC Intellicenter, the Falkirk Apartments seismic improvements and the Watkins Lecture Hall renovation.
The pandemic has affected the construction projects to varying degrees, explained Jacqueline Norman, the assistant vice chancellor of the Office of Planning, Budget & Administration and UCR’s campus architect. Construction crews and staff all had safety practices implemented; however, the progress and speed of the construction projects were affected the most.
